Tudor Pelagos: The Serious Diver's Guide

Tudor's purpose-built professional dive instrument: 42mm titanium case, 500m water resistance, ISO 6425 saturation-diving certification, helium escape valve, and a patented self-adjusting clasp that compensates for wrist expansion at depth. The first titanium-cased watch in Rolex/Tudor history. Runs the in-house MT5612 (COSC, 70-hour reserve). The LHD (Left Hand Drive) variant, with crown at 9 o'clock and individually numbered caseback (a first for any Wilsdorf-family brand), is the most collectible Pelagos reference. The FXD model, with fixed spring bars and Marine Nationale caseback engravings, is the closest thing to a modern military-issue dive watch available commercially. At $5,225 retail, the Pelagos offers specifications that rival watches at three to four times the price.

History

The Pelagos was born from Tudor's long history of building professional dive watches for military forces. From the 1950s through the 1980s, Tudor supplied specially modified Submariners to the French Marine Nationale, some with left-hand-drive crown configurations for combat swimmers. When Tudor launched the Pelagos in 2012 alongside the Black Bay, it represented the forward-looking half of a dual strategy: Black Bay looked back at Tudor's heritage, while Pelagos looked forward with modern materials and extreme performance. The name comes from the Greek word for 'open sea': pelagos, and the watch lives up to it. It was the first watch in the entire Rolex/Tudor portfolio to feature a full titanium case, and its 500-meter depth rating placed it firmly in professional territory.
