Sky-Dweller
Rolex Sky-Dweller: The Complete Collector's Encyclopedia
The Rolex Sky-Dweller is the most complicated watch in Rolex's current production lineup, combining an annual calendar, dual time zone display, and month indicator in a 42mm case controlled by the patented Ring Command bezel. Debuted at Baselworld 2012 as Rolex's first entirely new model family in two decades, it carried 14 patents at launch. The Saros annual calendar system (named after the astronomical cycle) requires manual date correction only once per year, in February. The Ring Command bezel, a fluted bezel that physically interacts with the movement to select functions, was unprecedented in watchmaking. Originally offered only in precious metals, the 2017 introduction of Rolesor (steel and gold) variants created intense demand; the 2023 Ref. 336934 in white Rolesor brought the retail entry to $17,750. The Cal. 9002, with approximately 380 components and 72-hour power reserve, represents Rolex's most ambitious movement engineering in serial production.

History
The Rolex Sky-Dweller was conceived for the modern cosmopolitan traveler, a globetrotter who needed to track two time zones and a calendar without carrying a second watch. Rolex unveiled it at Baselworld 2012 as its first entirely new model in 20 years (since the Yacht-Master debuted in 1992), immediately signaling that this was no incremental update but a statement of mechanical ambition. Powered by the Calibre 9001 and carrying 14 patents at launch, the Sky-Dweller introduced two groundbreaking innovations: the Saros annual calendar (named after the astronomical Saros cycle) and the Ring Command bezel, a fluted bezel that physically interacts with the movement to select functions. At debut, Rolex offered it exclusively in precious metals: yellow gold (326938), white gold (326939), and Everose gold (326135 with leather strap, 326935 with Oyster bracelet), positioning it firmly as a haute horlogerie statement rather than a sport tool.
