GMT-Master

Rolex GMT-Master: The Original Travel Watch

The original Rolex GMT-Master was developed in 1955 at Pan American World Airways' request, giving jet-age pilots the ability to track two time zones simultaneously via a 24-hour hand paired with a rotatable 24-hour bezel. The red-and-blue "Pepsi" bezel was functional by design: red distinguished daytime hours from blue nighttime hours. From the fragile Bakelite bezel of the Ref. 6542, through the 21-year production run of the Ref. 1675, to the quick-set Cal. 3075 in the final Ref. 16750, the GMT-Master I defined an entire genre of travel watches before yielding to the independently-adjustable-hour-hand GMT-Master II beginning in 1982. Today, original Pepsi, Root Beer, and Coke aluminum bezels on vintage GMT-Master I references are among the most recognizable and collectible configurations in all of watchmaking.

History

In the early 1950s, Pan American World Airways approached Rolex with a challenge: design a wristwatch that could simultaneously display the time in two time zones. Transatlantic jet travel was dawning: Pan Am's Boeing 707 service would begin in 1958, and pilots needed to track both local time and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) for navigation. Rolex responded with the GMT-Master, Reference 6542, unveiled at the Basel Watch Fair in 1955. Its defining innovation was a fourth hand (a 24-hour arrow hand)paired with a rotatable 24-hour bezel. The red-and-blue bezel color scheme wasn't decorative; it distinguished day hours (red) from night hours (blue) at a glance. Pan Am adopted the GMT-Master as official pilot equipment, and the watch became synonymous with international aviation.

Comparisons

Cultural Significance

Pan American Airways Pilots

Ref. 6542 / 1675

The GMT-Master was literally created for Pan Am. For two decades, it was standard-issue equipment for the world's most prestigious airline's cockpit crews. The watch didn't just tell time. It represented the glamour of the jet age, when airline pilots were cultural icons.

Honor Blackman (as Pussy Galore)

Ref. 6542

Wore the GMT-Master in Goldfinger (1964), giving the watch its first Bond-universe appearance. While Connery wore the Submariner, it was the GMT-Master that dressed the film's most memorable character.

Clint Eastwood

Ref. 1675 Root Beer (two-tone)

The Hollywood legend's preferred Rolex, worn both on and off screen. Eastwood's association with the brown-and-gold 'Root Beer' bezel is so strong that the colorway is sometimes called the 'Clint Eastwood GMT.' His understated, masculine style perfectly matched the warm tones of the two-tone GMT.

Che Guevara

Ref. 1675

The revolutionary was photographed wearing a GMT-Master, an ironic image that became iconic: a Communist leader wearing a Swiss luxury watch. The contradiction only added to both the man's and the watch's mythology.

Pablo Picasso

GMT-Master (attributed)

The artist was reportedly given a GMT-Master, adding the watch to its growing roster of cultural heavyweights from art, politics, and adventure.

Fidel Castro

Ref. 1675

Often photographed wearing two Rolex watches simultaneously, one of which was frequently a GMT-Master. Like Guevara, the revolutionary's embrace of Rolex became a fascinating cultural paradox.
