Rolex Day-Date 40: The Modern President's Watch

The Rolex Day-Date 40 is the modern expression of what may be the most prestigious production wristwatch ever made. Since its introduction in 1956, the Day-Date has been the only Rolex available exclusively in precious metals, never offered in steel or two-tone configurations. The 40mm iteration, launched in 2015, replaced the 41mm Day-Date II with more refined proportions, housing the Cal. 3255 with 70-hour power reserve and 14 patents. Available in 18k yellow gold (Ref. 228238), 18k Everose gold (Ref. 228235), 18k white gold (Ref. 228239), and 950 platinum (Ref. 228206), each variant carries the iconic President bracelet and the distinction of being the only Rolex to display both the full day of the week and the date. The platinum model's ice blue dial remains exclusive to that metal, making it a collector benchmark.

History

The Day-Date was born in 1956 as Reference 6511: the world's first wristwatch to display both the day of the week (spelled out in full) and the date in windows on the dial. Hans Wilsdorf reserved it exclusively for precious metals, creating an instant hierarchy: if you wore a Day-Date, you wore gold or platinum. Period. The accompanying President bracelet, with its distinctive three-piece semi-circular links, was designed specifically for this model and became so synonymous with power that the watch itself earned the nickname 'The President.' Lyndon B. Johnson was the first sitting U.S. President to make it famous, but the association grew through Nixon, Reagan, and beyond. The Day-Date 40 arrived in 2015 as the modern refinement of this 70-year legacy: replacing the short-lived 41mm Day-Date II (2008-2015) with better proportions and Rolex's latest Cal. 3255 movement.

Market Trajectory

Day-Date 40 prices have stabilized and show signs of modest recovery in 2026. The precious-metal-only positioning creates a natural price floor, the melt value of the gold alone provides downside protection. Exotic dial configurations outperform standard dials.

Investment Grade

B-tier for standard configurations (holds value, modest depreciation). A-tier for exotic/rare dials (meteorite, malachite, rare stone). A-tier for platinum (genuine scarcity, ice blue exclusivity). The Day-Date 40 is primarily a luxury purchase, not an investment, but it holds value better than virtually any other luxury good at its price point.

Best Value Pick

The Ref. 228238 in yellow gold with a standard champagne or white dial offers the best value: the full Day-Date 40 experience (gold case, fluted bezel, President bracelet, Cal. 3255)at below retail on the pre-owned market. It's the President's Watch at its most accessible.
