MB&F HM7 Aquapod: Specs, References, Prices | Ultimate Watch

The MB&F HM7 Aquapod is Maximilian Busser's jellyfish watch, and once you see it in the metal that description stops sounding like marketing. Launched just ahead of SIHH in 2017, the HM7 is a spherical Horological Machine built around a vertical, three-dimensional automatic tourbillon movement that stacks its indications like a biological organism: the winding rotor at the bottom, the running seconds in the middle, and a 60-second flying tourbillon floating at the very top under a domed sapphire crystal. The case measures 53.8mm across and stands 21.3mm tall, wrapped in a unidirectional rotating bezel set with a colored sapphire ring, and it rides on a soft FKM rubber strap that suits the aquatic theme. We handle a lot of independent horology on 47th Street, and the HM7 is one of the few watches that stops the room when it comes across the counter. It is not a dive watch despite the bezel and the ocean styling; it is a wearable piece of concentric watchmaking that happens to be rated for water. If you own one, or you are chasing one, this is the reference we point buyers to.

Collector's Lore

The origin story is the piece of lore every dealer repeats: Max Busser has said the Aquapod grew out of a childhood memory of being stung by a jellyfish, an unpleasant encounter that turned into a lifelong fascination with the creatures. Look at the watch with that in mind and it is unmistakable, from the domed sapphire bell to the tentacle-form rotor to the rubber strap standing in for the trailing tentacles. Collectors also love the winding rotor: it is machined from a solid block of titanium into a tentacle shape and weighted underneath with a platinum sector, so the piece that makes the watch practical is also the piece that completes the jellyfish. And the concentric layout is the flex that watchmakers respect. Getting a rotor at the bottom, a running indication in the middle, and a flying tourbillon at the top all to rotate around one central axis is genuinely hard engineering dressed up as a sea creature, which is the whole MB&F trick in one watch.
