Rolex Datejust 36: The Watch That Defined Modern Watchmaking

The Rolex Datejust 36 is the most produced, most versatile, and arguably most important watch Rolex has ever made. Launched in 1945 to celebrate the brand's 40th anniversary, it was the world's first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window on the dial. For 81 years, the 36mm Datejust has been the watch of presidents, dealmakers, and everyday achievers. It transcends categories: neither a dive watch, nor a pilot's watch, nor strictly a dress watch. From the original Ref. 4467 with its bubble back case to today's Ref. 126234 with its 70-hour Cal. 3235, the Datejust 36 has dressed more wrists, closed more deals, and attended more milestone moments than any other luxury timepiece in history. The 36mm case, once considered large for its era, is now celebrated as the ideal proportion in a market returning to classic sizing.

History

The Datejust was born in 1945 (Reference 4467)as a 36mm yellow gold watch on the newly designed Jubilee bracelet, created to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary. It was the world's first self-winding chronometer wristwatch with a date window on the dial, an innovation that seems obvious today but was revolutionary in 1945. The date changed gradually over several hours, rotating from one number to the next. The 36mm case size was considered bold for the era, and the combination of Oyster case, Perpetual movement, and date function created a trifecta of practicality that no competitor could match. Hans Wilsdorf himself called it the embodiment of Rolex's achievements to date: hence the name 'Datejust.'

Market Trajectory

Datejust 36 prices are stable and slowly appreciating across all generations. The model is experiencing a cultural renaissance driven by the smaller-watch trend and social media visibility. Vintage 1601s are being rediscovered by younger collectors, pushing prices into new territory.

Investment Grade

B-tier for current production (holds value, modest appreciation). B+ tier for five-digit references (steady appreciation). A-tier for rare vintage dials (strong appreciation potential). The Datejust 36 is a wear-and-enjoy proposition first, an investment second.

Best Value Pick

The Ref. 16234 (1988-2004) is the best value in the Datejust 36 family: sapphire crystal, quick-set date, Cal. 3135, 18k white gold fluted bezel: starting under $6,000. It's a genuine Rolex Datejust with all the modern essentials at a price that defies logic.

Wore a gold Datejust during his presidency, continuing the Datejust's White House tradition established by Eisenhower.

Warren Buffett
