Rolex Explorer 124270
Known as Explorer 36
The 124270 is the modern Rolex Explorer 36, introduced in April 2021 as the direct replacement for the 214270 and, going back further, the classic 114270. Rolex brought the case back to the original 36mm after a decade at 39mm, so this is the reference that put the Explorer back to the size Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay era watches were built around. Black dial, smooth polished bezel, Oystersteel case and Oyster bracelet, the 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals in Chromalight with baton markers and Mercedes hands. Nothing dresses it up, nothing turns it into a tool it isn't. It is the cleanest steel Rolex you can buy and, in 2026, one of the few sport models sitting at retail instead of over it. We see these across the counter constantly on 47th Street, and they move fast in every condition tier.
Produced: 2021 to present. Introduced April 2021 alongside the two-tone Rolesor 124273. Current-production reference as of 2026.

Market & Value
This is one of the honest ones in the Rolex lineup right now. US retail is $7,900 as of 2026, after Rolex's roughly 7 percent price bump in January 2026. The secondary market sits right on top of that, trading around $7,000 to $7,900 depending on condition and completeness, essentially at or just under retail. That was not always the case. When the 124270 hit the gray market in May 2021 it was changing hands near $11,000, held around $10,000 through mid-2022, then bled down over the following three years as the broader Rolex sport-watch bubble deflated. What you get today is a current-production Rolex that carries almost no gray-market premium, which makes it one of the cleaner value buys in the catalog. Full-set examples with box, papers, and card command the top of the range; watch-only and later-service pieces sit lower. On the buy side, we write checks on these weekly, and a complete 124270 with an unpolished case and a dated card moves for us in days, not weeks.
What to Know Before You Buy
Three things to check before you buy or sell one. First, size: the 124270 is 36mm, and the jump back down from the 39mm 214270 is polarizing. On a 7-inch wrist it wears like a tool watch should; on a larger wrist some buyers find it small. Try it on before you commit. Second, movement generation: the 124270 runs the Caliber 3230 with a 70-hour power reserve, a real upgrade over the 214270's 3132 and the 114270's 3130 at roughly 48 hours. If someone is quoting you a 124270 but describing a two-day reserve, the reference or the story is wrong. Third, the dial variants: the 124270 is the all-steel black-dial version; the 124273 is the yellow Rolesor two-tone with a black dial. Don't let a listing blur the two, the two-tone carries a different price. Condition drivers that matter to us on 47th Street: an unpolished case with sharp lug bevels, an intact Chromalight lume plot, a complete box and papers set, and a purchase date that supports warranty coverage. Rolex's international warranty runs five years from the original retail date, so a recent card adds real dollars.
