Zenith Chronomaster Original Buying Guide: El Primero 3600 Specs, References, Prices | Ultimate Watch
The Zenith Chronomaster Original is the watch that most directly answers the question every El Primero shopper eventually asks: which one looks and feels closest to the 1969 original without being a vintage gamble. Zenith launched it in 2021 as a 38mm steel chronograph carrying the tri-colour dial that made the reference A386 a legend, and it did the smart thing by not trying to make the case bigger or busier than the original. We are on 47th Street, we buy and sell El Primeros of every generation, and we tell people the same thing at the counter: this is the modern Zenith that a vintage collector actually respects, because the proportions are honest and the movement inside is the best El Primero the factory has ever built. The dial reads silvery-white with three overlapping sub-registers in silver, light grey, and blue, the same colour language as the A386, and the case sits at a wearable 38mm across with a box-shaped sapphire crystal that nods to the domed acrylic of the period. What separates it from every earlier Chronomaster is the calibre. Zenith fitted the El Primero 3600, a high-beat movement that runs the central chronograph hand around the entire dial once every ten seconds, letting you read the chronograph to a tenth of a second off a graduated flange. That is not a marketing gimmick. It is the whole point of a 36,000 vph movement finally being used the way the frequency always allowed. If you want an El Primero that is period-correct in look and genuinely current in mechanics, this is the one we point people toward.

Collector's Lore
The single best piece of El Primero lore is Charles Vermot, the Zenith watchmaker who defied orders in the 1970s to scrap the El Primero tooling. When quartz was killing mechanical watchmaking and American ownership wanted the presses gone, Vermot secretly boxed up the cams, presses, and plans and bricked them into a hidden room in the Le Locle factory. Years later, when Rolex came looking for a high-beat automatic chronograph for the Daytona, the tooling still existed because of him, and the El Primero was reborn. The other detail collectors love: the central chronograph hand on the 3600 caliber does something no vintage El Primero could show off, sweeping the entire dial once every ten seconds so the 36,000 vph frequency finally translates into a readable tenth-of-a-second measurement. The high beat was always there; the 3600 is the first time Zenith built the dial to let you actually see it. And the name El Primero means 'the first' in Spanish, chosen because Zenith got there before Heuer, Breitling, and Seiko in 1969. When you wear a Chronomaster Original, you are wearing the direct descendant of that first.
