Luminor Due

Panerai Luminor Due: The Complete Collector's Encyclopedia

Panerai's slim reinterpretation of the Luminor, achieving a case thickness under 11mm compared to the standard Luminor's 15mm-plus. Launched at SIHH 2016 in 42mm and 45mm sizes; a 38mm (the smallest Panerai ever made) followed in 2018. Retains the crown-protecting bridge and sandwich dial construction. The 42mm uses the in-house P.900 automatic caliber with 72-hour reserve. Water resistance is 30m, sufficient for hand-washing but explicitly not for swimming. Available in steel, titanium, and Goldtech (Panerai's proprietary copper-rich rose gold alloy). The PAM01046 (42mm black) at $7,000 to $9,000 pre-owned represents the most accessible entry to Panerai with a genuine in-house movement. Blue-dial PAM01043 commands a slight premium.

History

By the 2010s, Panerai faced a challenge: its legendary designs (born in military dive watches for Italian Navy frogmen)were magnificent but massive. The standard Luminor at 44mm and 15mm thick wasn't exactly a boardroom companion. CEO Angelo Bonati's vision was to create a Luminor that maintained the brand's DNA while fitting comfortably under a cuff. The result, debuted at SIHH 2016, was the Luminor Due, a case under 11mm thick that retained the crown-protecting bridge, sandwich dial, and cushion-case silhouette. To achieve the slim profile, Panerai developed new calibres: the hand-wound P.1000 (just 3.85mm thick) for the 42mm and the micro-rotor P.4000 (3.95mm thick) for the 45mm. The Due wasn't a compromise. It was an engineering achievement.

Johnson has been photographed wearing Panerai Luminor Due models: fitting given his Hollywood persona and Panerai's cinematic connection (Stallone famously introduced Panerai to America).

Collector's Lore

The P.1000 hand-wound calibre developed for the original Due 42mm is just 3.85mm thick: thinner than many quartz movements. Achieving this with a mechanical hand-wound architecture was a genuine engineering feat.

When the Due launched in 2016, one prominent Paneristi forum member called it 'a Panerai for people who don't like Panerai.' It became the brand's best-selling new collection within two years.

The 38mm Due (2018) was the smallest Panerai ever made, a milestone for a brand whose identity was built on being the biggest thing on anyone's wrist.
