The Omega Seamaster Ploprof is the crown-on-the-left, jaw-of-a-case deep diver that Omega built for saturation divers, not desk divers. The name is short for Plongeur Professionnel, French for professional diver. The original Seamaster 600 reference 166.077, shown at Basel in 1969 and sold from 1971, was rated to 600 meters with a one-piece monocoque case so tight it needed no helium escape valve at all. Omega relaunched the idea in 2009 as the Ploprof 1200M, rated to a genuine 1200 meters, and the line is still in the catalog today in steel, O-MEGASTEEL, and titanium. The Ploprof was born out of a real problem, not a marketing exercise. When COMEX divers were working deep saturation jobs, a crown that could snag or a case seal that could fail was a genuine hazard, and Omega's answer was to bolt the crown to the left under a guard and cast the case as one solid block. That is why the 166.077 has no traditional caseback: there was simply nothing to unscrew. Collectors prize the earliest examples and any documented prototype pieces carrying the caliber 1000, and they fight over unpolished cases because the sharp, faceted geometry of the monocoque is the first thing lost to a careless polisher. The watch's nickname stuck so hard that Omega itself now uses Ploprof as the official model name rather than Seamaster 600. When the 1200M returned in 2009 with a true 1200 meter rating, it settled a long-running debate about whether Omega would ever build a diver this uncompromising again. It would, and it still does.
