A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1: The Icon of German Watchmaking
The Lange 1, reference 191.032 in current production, is the defining icon of modern German watchmaking. Debuted October 24, 1994, as the flagship of A. Lange & Söhne's post-reunification relaunch, it introduced an asymmetric dial layout derived from the Golden Ratio: off-center time display, subsidiary seconds at 5, power reserve at 3, and a patented twin-disc outsize date at 12 inspired by the Dresden Semper Opera clock. The current second generation (Cal. L121.1, from 2015) upgraded the original with an instantaneously jumping date, proprietary balance spring, and free-sprung balance while preserving the 38.5mm case dimensions. Available in 18K pink gold, white gold, and platinum 950. Retail starts at $42,800 (pink gold, 2025); pre-owned examples trade $33,000-$38,000 in the same metal. First-generation Ref. 101.xxx models from 1994-1996 are increasingly collectible, and the ultra-rare stainless steel variants from the late 1990s have sold for $175,000+ at auction.

History
The Lange 1's story is inseparable from the story of German reunification. Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his workshop in Glashütte in 1845, creating precision timepieces that earned Saxony its reputation as Germany's watchmaking capital. After World War II, the Soviet occupation expropriated the Lange factory in 1948, and the brand ceased to exist for 44 years. In 1990, Walter Lange (Ferdinand's great-grandson)re-registered the company and began four years of secretive development. On October 24, 1994, he unveiled four watches that announced Lange's return to the world. The Lange 1, with its radical asymmetric dial, was the star. The off-center hours and minutes, subsidiary seconds, power reserve indicator (marked 'Auf/Ab' in German), and outsize date were arranged in a seemingly random but mathematically precise composition based on the Golden Ratio. Nothing overlapped. Everything balanced. It was unlike anything Switzerland had ever produced, and that was exactly the point.
