The Grand Seiko Spring Drive Chronograph is the watch we point people to when they say they have never seen a Grand Seiko do something a Swiss watch cannot. It runs on Spring Drive, a movement that winds from a mainspring like any mechanical watch but is regulated by a quartz oscillator and an electromagnetic brake instead of a balance wheel and escapement. The result is a seconds hand that glides, not ticks and not steps, in one continuous sweep around the dial. Grand Seiko added a chronograph and a GMT hand to that platform in 2007 with caliber 9R86, and that combination has anchored the top of the Grand Seiko sport range ever since. The Spring Drive story that watchmakers respect is the one about how long it took. Seiko chased the idea from the late 1970s and reportedly ran through hundreds of prototypes before the first Spring Drive shipped in 1999, because the hard part was never the spring, it was braking the glide wheel smoothly enough with an electromagnetic force referenced to quartz. The tell that separates a real Spring Drive from a smooth-sweep quartz imitation is that Spring Drive has no battery and no rotor-stepping: wind it, and the seconds hand glides on stored mainspring torque alone. Collectors prize the 9R96 examples for the 18k gold medallion on the rotor, a small mark that means the movement was individually adjusted to the tighter half-second-per-day spec.
