Tourbillon Souverain
The F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain is the watch that started the whole thing. When Francois-Paul Journe put it on the market in 1999 under the F.P.Journe -Invenit et Fecit- signature, it became the first wristwatch ever fitted with a remontoir d'egalite, a constant-force device that feeds the escapement a steady dose of energy no matter how wound the mainspring is. That is the point people miss when they call it just another tourbillon. Breguet gave the world the tourbillon in 1801 to average out positional error. Journe took that same cage and paired it with a constant-force mechanism and, from 2004, a jumping deadbeat seconds hand, so you get a tourbillon whose seconds tick once per second like a precision regulator instead of sweeping. We see these across the counter at 19 West 47th Street every year, and there are very few watches from a living independent that a serious collector will cross a room for the way they cross it for a Journe tourbillon. This is the founding object of the modern independent watchmaking movement, and the market prices it that way.

Collector's Lore
The Souscription pieces carry dial engravings in the format XX/93, a reference collectors treat as a marker of the founding run. The example numbered 15/93 that sold at Phillips in November 2024 was described in the catalog as the second wristwatch Journe ever made and the first he ever sold, which is about as close to the origin of the modern brand as a physical object gets. Early pieces have a rawer, more industrial character: visible cone-and-feeler power reserve at 11 o'clock, Breguet hands, solid case backs, straps held by screws. Journe moved his serial movements to solid gold around 2004, so a gold movement in an early piece is a tell that a collector will notice immediately. Among specialists, the constant-force remontoir, not the tourbillon, is the part people talk about, because that is the genuine wristwatch first that put Journe on the map.
