GIA vs IGI vs AGS: Diamond Certification Explained

Here is something the diamond industry does not want you to think about too hard: the grade on your diamond certificate might be wrong. Not fraudulently wrong, but optimistically wrong. And the lab that issued the certificate is the single biggest factor in whether those grades are accurate or generous.

A diamond's certification is its identity document. It tells you the carat weight, cut grade, color grade, clarity grade, and any treatments or inclusions. It is the basis for pricing, insurance, and resale. Getting the wrong certificate, or misunderstanding what a certificate actually tells you, can cost you thousands of dollars.

We have been reading diamond certificates on 47th Street for over 60 years. We have seen tens of thousands of grading reports from every major lab. Here is what you actually need to know.

What Is a Diamond Certificate?

A diamond certificate (properly called a "grading report") is a document issued by an independent gemological laboratory that evaluates a diamond's characteristics. The lab does not own the diamond, does not sell the diamond, and has no financial stake in the grade it assigns. At least, that is the theory.

The certificate includes:

Carat weight: measured to the hundredth of a carat on a precision scale. This is the one grade that is completely objective and consistent across all labs.

Cut grade: an assessment of the diamond's proportions, symmetry, and polish. This applies primarily to round brilliant diamonds; fancy shapes (oval, cushion, emerald, etc.) generally do not receive an overall cut grade from GIA.

Color grade: rated on a D (colorless) to Z (light yellow/brown) scale. This is assessed by comparing the diamond face-down against a set of master stones under controlled lighting.

Clarity grade: rated from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3), based on the visibility of inclusions and blemishes under 10x magnification.

Fluorescence: the diamond's reaction to ultraviolet light, rated from None to Very Strong.

Measurements: the diamond's dimensions in millimeters.

Plot diagram: a map showing the location and type of inclusions (on most reports for diamonds over a certain size).

The Big Three Labs

GIA (Gemological Institute of America)

Founded in 1931, GIA is the gold standard of diamond grading. Full stop. When the diamond industry talks about grading standards, they are talking about the GIA system. GIA literally invented the 4Cs grading framework that every other lab uses.

Why GIA matters:

Consistency. GIA is the most consistent grading lab in the world. A G-color, VS2-clarity grade from GIA means the same thing whether the diamond was graded in New York, Carlsbad, Mumbai, or Antwerp. GIA achieves this through rigorous grading protocols: every diamond is graded by multiple gemologists independently, and the final grade requires consensus.

Market acceptance. GIA certificates are universally accepted and trusted by dealers, retailers, and insurers worldwide. When you sell a GIA-certified diamond, the buyer does not second-guess the grade. This translates directly to higher resale values.

No financial conflicts. GIA is a nonprofit educational institution. It does not buy or sell diamonds. It has no incentive to inflate grades.

Where GIA falls short:

GIA does not grade cut quality on fancy shapes. If you are buying an oval, cushion, pear, or emerald-cut diamond, GIA will give you proportions and symmetry grades but not an overall cut grade. This is a real limitation, since cut quality is the single biggest factor in how a diamond looks.

GIA grading takes time. Standard turnaround is roughly two to four weeks for a submission. For the trade, this is fine. For a consumer who wants to buy a diamond today and have it certified, the wait can be frustrating.

GIA certificates cost more. Depending on the diamond's size, a GIA report runs $100 to $300+. This cost is passed to the consumer as part of the diamond's price.

IGI (International Gemological Institute)

Founded in 1975 in Antwerp, IGI has grown to become the largest independent gemological laboratory in the world by volume. IGI has labs across Europe, Asia, and North America, and it certifies a significant percentage of the world's diamonds, particularly lab-grown stones.

The good:

Speed and accessibility. IGI processes diamonds faster and has more locations than GIA. For the trade, this means quicker turnaround.

Lab-grown diamond grading. IGI has positioned itself as the dominant certifier for lab-grown diamonds. If you are buying a lab-grown stone, there is a very good chance it carries an IGI report.

Fancy shape cut grading. Unlike GIA, IGI provides cut grades for fancy shapes. For buyers of ovals, cushions, and other non-round diamonds, this is genuinely useful information.

The problem:

Grading consistency. This is where things get contentious. Multiple independent studies and industry comparisons have found that IGI grades tend to be more generous than GIA, particularly on color and clarity. A diamond graded G color by IGI might grade as H or even I color at GIA. A diamond graded VS2 by IGI might come back SI1 at GIA.

This is not a trivial difference. A one-grade difference in color on a 1-carat diamond can represent $500 to $1,500 in market value. A one-grade difference in clarity can be similar. If an IGI-certified diamond is graded one step generous on both color and clarity, you might be overpaying by $1,000 to $3,000 compared to what the diamond would be worth with GIA grades.

To be fair, IGI has made significant efforts to tighten its grading standards in recent years. The gap has narrowed. But in our experience handling thousands of diamonds, the tendency toward generosity persists, particularly on stones graded at certain IGI locations.

The bottom line on IGI:

For lab-grown diamonds, IGI certification is perfectly adequate. The price differential between lab-grown grades is relatively small, and the absolute prices are low enough that a one-grade variance matters less in dollar terms.

For natural diamonds, especially those over 1 carat, we strongly recommend GIA certification. The pricing precision and resale confidence are worth the premium.

AGS (American Gem Society)

Founded in 1934, AGS takes a different approach to diamond grading than either GIA or IGI. Where GIA uses descriptive grades (Excellent, Very Good, Good), AGS uses a numerical scale from 0 (Ideal) to 10 (Poor). AGS is also known for its rigorous cut grading system, which some argue is more detailed and technically precise than GIA's.

The strengths:

Cut grading. AGS's cut grading system, called the AGS Ideal Cut system, uses ray-tracing technology to analyze light performance. It considers not just proportions and symmetry but actual light return, fire, and scintillation. An AGS Ideal (0) cut grade is among the highest standards for cut quality in the industry.

Consistency. AGS grading is generally considered to be on par with GIA in terms of strictness and consistency. An AGS 0 diamond is a genuinely exceptional stone.

The weaknesses:

Market penetration. AGS reports are much less common than GIA or IGI. Many dealers and consumers are unfamiliar with the AGS grading scale. This can create friction when selling, as a buyer may not know what an "AGS 0" means without explanation.

Limited recognition internationally. Outside the United States, AGS certificates carry less weight than GIA. If you ever plan to sell your diamond overseas, this matters.

Cost and availability. AGS is a smaller operation, and getting a diamond graded can take longer than GIA.

The bottom line on AGS:

AGS is an excellent lab with rigorous standards. If you are buying a round brilliant diamond and cut quality is your top priority, an AGS Ideal certificate is a strong endorsement. But for overall market acceptance and resale value, GIA remains the safer choice.

The Other Labs

Beyond the big three, there are numerous smaller labs that issue diamond grading reports. Here is our honest assessment:

EGL (European Gemological Laboratory): Avoid. EGL's grading has been widely criticized in the industry for inconsistency and grade inflation. Multiple EGL entities operate independently under the same brand name, and quality varies wildly between locations. A diamond graded H/VS2 by EGL might grade J/SI1 or worse at GIA. The price difference is substantial, and you are likely overpaying.

HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant): Based in Antwerp, HRD is respected in the European market and generally grades with reasonable accuracy, though slightly more generous than GIA on average. If you are buying in Europe, an HRD certificate is acceptable. In the U.S. market, it carries less weight.

GSI (Gemological Science International): Used heavily by some big-box retailers (Kay, Zales, Jared). GSI grades tend to be generous, similar to IGI's historical tendencies. If a retailer is using GSI instead of GIA, ask yourself why. The answer is usually that the diamonds grade higher on paper with GSI, which allows the retailer to charge more for what might be a lower-quality stone.

GCAL (Gem Certification and Assurance Lab): A smaller lab with a good reputation for accuracy. GCAL guarantees its grades and offers a "zero tolerance" policy. It is not as widely recognized as GIA, but its grading is considered reliable.

Why Grading Differences Exist

How can two supposedly independent laboratories look at the same diamond and arrive at different grades? Several factors contribute:

Subjectivity in color and clarity. Despite standardized scales, color and clarity grading involve human judgment. Is this stone on the line between G and H? Different gemologists can honestly disagree. GIA's multi-grader consensus system minimizes this variance; labs with less rigorous protocols amplify it.

Master stone calibration. Color grading requires comparing the diamond against a set of master stones. If a lab's master stones are slightly off calibration, every grade they issue will be shifted. GIA maintains meticulously calibrated master sets across all its locations. Smaller labs may not.

Economic incentives. A lab that grades generously attracts more business from dealers, because those dealers can sell their diamonds at higher prices. GIA, as a nonprofit with massive market dominance, is insulated from this pressure. Smaller labs that depend on trade volume for revenue are not.

Inconsistency within labs. Even within a single lab, different locations or different grading teams can produce slightly different results. IGI's grades from its Antwerp lab, for example, have historically differed from its Mumbai lab's output.

What This Means for Your Purchase

If You Are Buying a Natural Diamond

Buy GIA-certified. Period. The premium you pay for a GIA-certified diamond (versus an IGI or EGL-certified stone of supposedly the same grade) is a premium for accuracy, not a markup for the certificate. A GIA-certified G/VS2 diamond costs more than an IGI-certified G/VS2 because the GIA stone is actually G/VS2. The IGI stone might be H/SI1.

If a retailer is pushing non-GIA certified natural diamonds, ask them to explain why. If their answer involves phrases like "our lab is just as good" or "GIA is overrated," consider it a red flag.

If You Are Buying a Lab-Grown Diamond

IGI is the industry standard for lab-grown certification, and it is perfectly fine for this purpose. Lab-grown diamond prices are low enough and falling fast enough that a one-grade variance in color or clarity amounts to a smaller dollar difference. The more important thing with lab-grown diamonds is understanding that they have essentially no resale value, but that is a separate conversation.

If You Are Selling a Diamond

If your diamond has a non-GIA certificate and you want the best resale price, consider getting it GIA-certified before selling. Yes, the GIA report will cost $100 to $300 and take a few weeks. But a diamond with a GIA certificate will sell for 10% to 30% more than the same stone with an IGI or EGL certificate, because the buyer trusts the grade.

There is a risk here: GIA might grade the diamond lower than the original certificate indicated. But that is exactly the point. You want to know the real grade before you negotiate, not after.

The Laser Inscription

GIA, IGI, and AGS all offer laser inscription of the certificate number on the diamond's girdle (the thin edge). This microscopic inscription is invisible to the naked eye but readable under 10x magnification. It serves two purposes: identification (linking the physical stone to its certificate) and security (making it harder to swap the stone during setting or repair).

Always request a laser inscription. It costs a nominal fee (often included in the grading fee) and provides meaningful peace of mind.

How to Read a GIA Certificate

A GIA grading report contains a lot of information. Here is what matters most:

The date. GIA certificates do not expire, but a very old report (10+ years) might not reflect the diamond's current condition if it has been damaged or heavily worn.

The 4Cs. These are the headline grades that drive pricing.

The cut diagram. For round brilliants, GIA provides detailed proportions including table percentage, depth percentage, crown angle, pavilion angle, and girdle thickness. Even within the "Excellent" cut grade, there is variation. The most optically ideal proportions (sometimes called "super-ideal" or "hearts and arrows" specifications) fall within specific ranges that GIA does not separately call out.

The clarity plot. This diagram shows where inclusions are located and what type they are. Location matters. An inclusion under the table (the flat top of the diamond) is more visible than one near the girdle. A feather (a small crack) near the girdle edge could potentially expand with impact, posing a durability concern.

The comments section. This is where GIA notes any treatments, fluorescence effects, or unusual characteristics. Read it carefully.

The QR code. Modern GIA reports include a QR code that links to GIA's online database, where you can verify the report's authenticity and view a digital copy.

Fluorescence: The Misunderstood Factor

Fluorescence is the tendency of some diamonds to glow (usually blue) under ultraviolet light. About 25% to 35% of diamonds exhibit some degree of fluorescence.

The market discounts fluorescent diamonds, particularly those graded "Strong" or "Very Strong." Dealers knock 5% to 15% off the price for strong fluorescence. But here is the thing: in most cases, fluorescence has no negative impact on how the diamond looks in normal conditions. In fact, for diamonds in the G to J color range, blue fluorescence can actually make the stone appear whiter and more colorless.

The only scenario where fluorescence is genuinely problematic is when it causes a diamond to look "hazy" or "milky" in daylight. This affects roughly 2% to 3% of strongly fluorescent diamonds. You can check for this by examining the stone in natural sunlight.

Our advice: do not automatically reject fluorescent diamonds. They represent a genuine value opportunity if you inspect them carefully. But do insist on seeing the diamond in person (or in a well-lit video) before buying.

The Certificate Is Not the Diamond

This is the most important thing we can tell you about diamond certification: the certificate describes the diamond, but it does not capture its beauty. Two diamonds with identical GIA grades can look meaningfully different. One might have better light performance. One might have inclusions in a less visible location. One might face up whiter than its color grade suggests.

Grades are a starting point for comparison, not the final word. Always see the diamond, ideally in person, before buying. And when you do, trust your eyes alongside the certificate.
